The Moeller Technique

Most drummers these days have heard of a powerful technique designed to maximize the bounce of their drum sticks, and double the speed of their hands - a technique most would pass off as a trick or gimmick. This technique however, is no trick at all; professional’s drummers everywhere are using it and teaching it to drummers of all skill levels. The name is... the Moeller technique.

The moeller technique changes the way we hold our sticks all the way to the way we hit our sticks to create a bounce that can double our stick speed. So how do you play the Moeller Technique? How do you increase your stick speed and control? This article will show you the basic Moeller strokes and hopefully teach you ways to start using the Moeller technique!

Why learn the Moeller Technique?

When you master the Moeller technique, you will start playing it everywhere on the drum set. You will use this incredible technique on your snare drum, hi hats, and toms. So it is definitely worth learning. Saying that; let me explain a bit of the Moeller technique. There are a lot of rumors out there about what the Moeller technique really is. The truth is, there are many different ways to play the Moeller technique, but the idea is the same. The result should be a massive increase in your stick speed, stick power, and stick control. This is obtained by controlling your drumstick. You will learn to hit the drum with more power than before with a powerful whipping motion. This motion is key to developing this power.

The Motions & Moeller Strokes

With this power stroke, also known as the Full Stroke, you will get a lot of bounce from your stick. The Moeller technique teaches you how to control this bounce and use it to create multiple strokes with one hit. Now this is not a double stroke roll, or multiple bounce roll, it is completely different. With a double stroke roll, you are using the bounce to create 2 or more strokes, with both sticks to create a constant fluid sound. With the Moeller technique, you can create the same effect with one hand. Make sense? By the time you have gotten your bounces from the full stroke, you should have your arm in the air, ready for the next powerful hit. So, after all this you will end up with a fluid motion on the stick, getting a decent one handed roll.

Achieving Hand Speed

Speed is key for the Moeller technique. You will notice you will be able to play speeds you could never reach before with one hand. By playing the Moeller technique on both hands, you get a single stroke roll with amazing speed, control and endurance. Because you are hitting once and getting 2 or more bounces, you can play this for extra long periods of time. You are pretty much doing half the work and getting twice the results. This is why this technique is so popular for older drummers who have problems with their tendons, wrists, and have arthritis.

Conclusion

So there is a quick explanation of the Moeller technique. Hopefully you can fully understand why this skill is so popular for professional drummers, and why you should learn it yourself!
